Behind the Scenes: The eXplorist Product Line

Contributor: Eric Waters, Product Manager - Outdoor GPS, From: Magellan GPS

Since 2009, Magellan has sought to create a new outdoor GPS series, the eXplorist line, which would incorporate the relevant technologies for GPS use by outdoor enthusiasts. The main features of these devices would include a high accuracy GPS (3-5 meters), daylight visible screens, compact & easy to hold, photo & video capable camera (510-710), microphone (510-710), touch screen (510-710), and customizable hard keys (510-710).

The devices would have to be able to survive the elements and so we designed the eXplorist devices to be waterproof to IPX7 standards, shock & drop resistant and have field replaceable AA battery support.

Learning from our success in the car navigation GPS business we have striven to integrate many of those features of our GPS technology into our outdoor devices such as our easy to use interface, turn-by-turn car navigation (710), and excellent map visibility on our outdoor displays.

Our eXplorist line is readily mountable and easy to carry. The available mounts include vehicle mounts, handlebar mounts for cyclists, motorcyclists & ATV enthusiasts, and swivel mounts for marine (or other flat surface) use. When it comes to the subject of carrying, each eXplorist has an integrated carabineer loop for convenient attachment. Optional carrying cases are also available as well.

To limit “pain points” we have made the devices easy to hold, mount, and store with an intuitive interface that is easy to use. A few of these features are waypoint marking whenever photos are taken, and a “Smart Arrow” feature which turns green if you are heading towards your destination, yellow if you are off course and red if you are heading in the wrong direction. There is also an “Active Suspend” mode which allows the user to save battery life without turning the device completely off.

As the company that first introduced combined topographic and car navigation GPS maps, we at Magellan continue to be on the forefront of mapping content quality when it comes to anything GPS-related. Our basemap, “World Edition” is simply the best out there. In addition to our award-winning maps we have extensive partnerships with various map providers. Some of the major ones include: Navteq for road coverage, Navonics for lakes & marine charts, National Geographic for USGS Topo quads, Digital Globe for satellite imagery, Intermap Technologies (USA) for topo & outdoor data, DMTI (Canada) also for topo & outdoor data, and other regional mapping providers for around-the-world coverage.

When it comes to geocaching, our devices allow for easy exchange of data to and from geocaching.com. Geocaching with an eXplorist is fully paperless with the ability to mark caches as Found, Not Found, Needs Maintenance, etc. You can sort caches by type, difficulty, size and terrain. Lastly, earn rewards and merit badges to make the activity of geocaching even more exciting.
