Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island, was said to have first drawn the famous map of the storied island, starring at it for days, dreaming up all the adventures that would end up in his famous book.
I’ve always been a big map-geek. I have the same fascination with maps, often finding myself stuck in the mysticism of a map, day-dreaming about the adventures to be had.
Now at Magellan, it is my goal to feed your appetite for adventure, with detailed maps that will get you there and back with stories and photos and videos to share.
Magellan map projects are created by partnering with best in class recreational map providers to offer a variety of content options for your favorite outdoor adventures.
Map options include Base Maps, Detail Maps, Image Maps, and Overlay Maps.
The eXplorist Worldwide Base Map is packed with geographic detail to give you situational awareness whereever you end up in the world. Much more than a typical basemap, this map has the entire road network in North America, Europe, and Australia, with major highways in the rest of the world. The map includes a shaded digital elevation model to give you a 3-dimensional idea of your surrounding terrain.
Magellan detail maps are packed with geographic information at various scales. Including land use, detailed lakes, streams and coastlines, trail networks, elevation contours, and tons of outdoor recreational points of interest. Magellan offers Detail Maps for many countries and many activities such as hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, offroading, snowmobiling, skiing, and watersports.
Magellan Image Maps are maps created from high resolution aerial or satellite imagery or scans of traditional paper maps. Aerial and Satellite imagery can give a sportsman or adventurer a better idea of the surrounding area they are in or heading for. Hunters can spot game funnels, watering holes, and strategic viewpoints while geocachers gain an advantage by understanding obstacles that may not normally show up on other maps, like a chain link fence blocking your path to the cache. Scanned paper maps such as National Geographics’ TOPO!, Ordinance Survey Explorer Series Maps, or Australia’s Geosciences maps are the traditional map source that show all the info of a detail map but in a single image.
Overlay maps are simple point, line, and polygon data that are meant to enhance your other map products by allowing you to add specialized content like snowmobile trails, all of the microbrewery POIs in your area, or hunting boundaries.
With so many map options we enable our customers to create a unique experience for their next outdoor adventure.
