Magellan GPS is 100% dedicated to geocaching. Magellan is the 2011 exclusive sponsor of Groundspeak’s Cache In Trash Out environmental initiative. Magellan offers paperless geocaching on all eXplorist models, including the eXplorist GC, which is the only handheld GPS receiver with a color screen that is 100% dedicated to geocaching.
Geocaching is a high-tech version of the game hide and seek, where adventure seekers use GPS technology to hide and find physical objects, solve location-based puzzles, and then share experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.
For the second year in a row, Magellan is the exclusive sponsor of Groundspeak’s Cache In Trash Out (CITO). Cache In Trash Out is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers have been dedicated to cleaning up parks and other cache-friendly places around the world. Through these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!
Last year Magellan hosted two CITO events in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In April San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park was the location of our first event. Our second event in August was at Griffith Park in Los Angeles. At both events Magellan employees and other geocachers came to search for some of the hundreds caches hidden in the parks. While they searched they carried bags and trash sticks to collect truck loads of litter! The winner of the most trash collected won a new eXplorist GC. All attendees received a Magellan Monkey Cache geocoin and other prizes! After the caches were found and the trash collected everyone had a well deserved rest and enjoyed a lunch from Boudin’s Bakery in San Francisco and Pink’s hotdogs in Los Angeles.
In addition to the two official Magellan events, Magellan supported other CITO events in the US and Canada with prizes and information.
