Magellan "BE THERE" GPS Adventure Drives Thousands Outdoors for Fun and Prizes in 32 Cities Across U.S. and Germany
Third-Annual Geocaching Contest Uses GPS Receivers and Internet to Create Fun-Filled Activity Where Families Win Prizes While Exploring the Great Outdoors
Santa Clara, CA (May 23, 2005) Summer fun will heat up with the start of the Magellan® BE THERETM GPS Adventure, a geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) contest that spans across 30 cities in the United States and two in Germany beginning May 23, 2005. Hosted exclusively on http://www.magellangps.com by Thales' navigation business, creator of Magellan GPS consumer products, the contest is open for anyone over the age of 18 to register. At the website, contestants can access clues they can use with a GPS receiver to get to obscure, but easily traversed, locations where containers are hidden above ground each week. The first person to BE THERE and find the container will retrieve a document inside that is redeemable for a first-place prize.
One of the fastest growing outdoor recreation activities with more than one million people participating worldwide, the Magellan contest has helped fuel excitement for the activity for three years. The theme of this year's contest leverages the company's integrated marketing campaign, which features inspirational outdoor imagery and invites audiences to BE THERE; precisely there with Magellan GPS precision, and to be in the moment getting the most out of every journey.
REI Joins Magellan for This Year's Treasure Hunt Outdoor retail chain REI is partnering with the Magellan GPS business to promote this year's geocaching contest and help contestants gear up for the game with free training sessions at select REI locations. REI geocaching clinics will teach attendees how to enter GPS coordinates into a GPS receiver and use it to guide them to hidden cache containers.
To further simplify geocaching, the Magellan business has introduced the new Magellan eXploristTM 400, 500 and 600 handheld GPS receivers with built-in geocaching capabilities. These rugged, compact eXplorists offer Magellan Geocaching Manager software, which allows users to load geocaching information directly from the Internet to the receiver as opposed to manually entering GPS coordinates. Priced from US$299.99 to US$449.99, the Magellan eXplorist 400, 500 and 600 are ideal for helping discover even the best-hidden caches.
"We're excited to be able to address this fast growing GPS application both with our product capabilities and with our third geocaching contest, which we're extending to Europe for the first time," said Amanda Higgins, senior director of corporate communications for Thales' navigation business. "Geocaching is a unique and engaging way for families to get outside together, and it appeals to a diverse group of people of all ages, from the tech whiz to the nature enthusiast. Plus, the competitive nature of the Magellan BE THERE GPS Adventure brings out the hidden explorer in all of us!"
About the Game The geocaching contest will lead participants on an adventure in the outdoors as they are challenged to BE THERE to discover beautiful locations and uncover and preserve the forgotten treasures of history. To play and be eligible to win, participants will need to have access to a GPS receiver and register for the contest at http://www.magellangps.com. Each week, the website will provide new clues that will help contestants narrow down the possible locations where cache containers are hidden for that week. By the end of each week, the clues will culminate in the unveiling of the exact latitude and longitude coordinates for contestants to enter in their GPS receivers and use in guiding them to a secret cache, a container hidden above ground on public property, like a park or forest. Each contestant who is first to BE THERE to find a cache container will retrieve a special contest document redeemable for a first-place prize.
First-place prizes will range from a trip, to outdoor recreation gear or Magellan navigation products such as a Magellan eXplorist 500 or a Magellan RoadMate portable vehicle navigation product. The major prize sponsor is Outside Magazine, which is awarding first-prize winners with a one-year subscription for the magazine and is providing products named as Outside Gear of the Year Award winners for 2005; see the list of products in the 2005 Outside Buyer's Guide or visit http://www.outsideonline.com. In addition, Groundspeak's Geocaching.com, the major hub for the geocaching community, is also sponsoring prize packages for some winners.
