Thales Navigation Sets The Course For Summer Fun With Magellan's GPS Treasure Hunt

Hi-tech, Geocaching Adventure Launches the First Color GPS Handhelds

Families and Fans of the Great Outdoors from Coast to Coast Are Encouraged to Log On to to Participate and Win Prizes in this Summer-long Geocaching Event

Starting June 27, 2003, and continuing throughout the summer, geocaching families across America will grab their Magellan® GPS receivers and head to the outdoors for some hi-tech fun as they search for valuable "lost" treasure. Magellan's GPS Treasure Hunt, a national web-based geocaching contest sponsored by Thales (TAL-less) Navigation, a leading global provider of GPS navigation solutions, will lead participants on a journey to find famed explorer Ferdinand Magellan's "lost treasures." Thousands of families are expected to participate as the search moves from city to city in 25 states from June 27 through Labor Day.

The summer contest is a celebration of the world's first and only full-color handheld GPS devices, the lightweight and pocket-sized Magellan SporTrak Color and the Magellan Meridian Color GPS handhelds, which feature a color screen that does for GPS what color did for television. The geocaching adventure is an ideal way to celebrate since it combines old-fashioned outdoor fun with the most modern technology - GPS receivers and the Internet. To play and be eligible to win, participants will need to own a GPS receiver and register at where, each week, clues from Magellan's journal will reveal location(s) of new hidden treasures. The final clue for each treasure will provide the exact latitude and longitude coordinates to input in the GPS receiver, and the treasure hunt will be on!

The first person to find each of the 31 treasure caches will win one of a treasure-trove of colorful prizes, including the Magellan SporTrak® Color GPS receivers, so outdoor enthusiasts can experience how color makes a difference as they navigate and explore; outdoor equipment, such as Coleman® Exponent® backpacking gear or a combo of the Coleman® RoadTripTM Grill and XtremeTM Cooler; or one of an array of colorful vacations ranging from a New England Fall Colors Getaway to a Las Vegas Neon Lights Excursion, and more. And, because everyone wins when they geocache with Magellan, the next 25 participants to discover each location will receive a free, Magellan cap to shield the summer sun during their outdoor adventures.

Growing rapidly in popularity, geocaching is a web-based game that engages participants in a search for containers, or "caches," using only clues and the latitude and longitude of the hidden container, usually placed on the ground surface (and sometimes obscured) in a public park or forest. Geocaching has become a natural choice for an affordable family activity because it combines the latest handheld technology with old-fashioned, outdoor fun and fitness. Users have the assurance of knowing where they are, how to get where they're going and the ability to return safely to where they started - plus they have the sense of excitement and discovery that only a geocaching treasure hunt can bring.
