Magellan's GPS CompanionTM for Europe Guides PalmTM V Handheld Users Across the Continent
Magellan's Navigation Attachment for the Palm V Series of Handhelds and IBM Workpad Offers Maps of 18 Countries and Automatic Route Calculation
Santa Clara, Calif. (November 10, 2000) Magellan Corporation, a leading manufacturer of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, announces the European release of the new GPS CompanionTM for PalmTM V - the only compact receiver that attaches without cables to the Palm V series of handheld computers and the IBM Workpad®. With Magellan''s own NAV CompanionTM software and Palmtop Software''s Route EuropeTM, the GPS Companion provides navigation information with more than 23 road maps of 18 European countries. It also features a route planner that automatically calculates the quickest or shortest route to the user''s destination. The GPS Companion offers mapping, navigation and information management solutions in a single device for traveling or exploring the great outdoors.
Fast and easy to use for business, tourism or recreation, the GPS Companion offers Magellan''s 12-parallel-channel GPS technology in a pocket-size, sleek, stylish design that provides a comfortable fit and weighs only 110 grams. With Route Europe, from Europe''s leading developer of software for mobile devices, the GPS Companion is the perfect go-anywhere navigation device for everyday use. Detailed road maps are available in English, French and German for Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Denmark, the Republic of Ireland, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The boxed GPS Companion and software set ships with a User/Quick Reference Guide, two AAA batteries and two CD-ROMs containing Route Europe and NAV Companion software. Palm handheld computers, from Palm, Inc., or the IBM Workpad, must be purchased separately.
"The GPS Companion brings the power of satellite access technology to the world''s most popular handheld products," said Steve Schneider, Magellan''s vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for consumer products. "By marrying these two technologies in a simple clip-on device, Magellan has created a productivity enhancement tool that no user of a Palm V series handheld should be without."
"We're pleased to have an industry leader like Magellan join us in offering high-quality, innovative products for Palm customers," said John Cook, director of consumer product marketing for Palm, Inc. "GPS products are convenient, time-saving navigation aids that benefit a wide range of people, from mobile professionals and sales teams to Palm customers traveling in town or off the beaten path."
GPS Companion users can load or remove maps as often as needed, see their position on a map, track a course, create waypoints and routes, and beam personally stored navigation data to another user''s handheld computer. Users can also access navigation information such as speed, heading, altitude, bearing, time to go and estimated time of arrival. Other features include convenient pull down menus and the ability to scroll through maps, zoom in and out, and view route instructions on an outlined table or on the map. In addition, the "find" function quickly locates villages, towns, cities and motorway exits.
Optional accessories include a canvas carrying case and an external power cable with a cigarette lighter adapter for extended in-vehicle operation. Drivers can also place the Palm V handheld and GPS Companion in the optional vehicle mounting bracket to enjoy a clear, hands-free view of the navigation screen. For safety reasons, the driver should not use this device in a vehicle to assist the driver to navigate while in motion.
In addition, the GPS Companion''s versatile design and standard interface allow users to further expand their Palm handheld''s usefulness by interchanging compatible third-party Palm OS® platform mapping software for applications such as golfing, tourism and more.
